TIG welding, also known as gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), is used to create flat, smooth welds with a high degree of tolerance and accuracy. A tungsten electrode is used to generate the arc instead of a consumable electrode in MIG/MAG welding. Due to its high arc temperature tolerance, tungsten does not melt into the seam when welded. A filler metal rod is fed in front of the pool of weld by hand or by a cold wire feeder, if there is a need for it. TIG welding is therefore a two-handed process. During welding, argon gas is used as a shielding gas. Materials that are typically welded with TIG include aluminium, stainless steel, and mild steel.
